Teen Summer Reading Guidelines

“Running” the Reading 5K: How it Works…

This year, teen summer reading is all about making a difference in our community!  Instead of entering a road race to raise funds for a sponsor, you will read books to earn donations to your favorite Monroe social services.  It’s easy!

  • Earn a ticket for every 50 pages you read
  • Use your ticket to vote for a donation to the social service of your choice by placing it in the appropriate container at the reference desk.  You can select:

Monroe Food Pantry – Provides food to Monroe residents in need

Project Warmth – Helps pay heating bills for those who cannot afford to keep their houses warm in the winter

Back to School Buddies – Provides backpacks and school supplies for kids in need

Eligibility:

Students entering grades 7-12 are eligible to participate in Teen Summer Reading.

 Timeline:

  • Starting on Friday, June 17th, register at the library or online by going to our Summer Reading page. Come to the library to pick up a starter package.
  • You can register up until Tuesday, August 9th, but books you read before you register do not count so be sure to sign up as early as possible! You must come to the library yourself to pick up all tickets and prizes.
  • All library summer reading must be logged in and tickets and prizes picked up by Wednesday, August 10th at 8:00 p.m.

Logging Your Reading:

All summer reading is tracked online. For each entry, indicate whether or not you have finished the book. Use the star system to rate books you finish.

Active Visitors Reward

Make a trip to the prize box every time you come to the library. There will be a great selection of fun stuff, including mini gift cards from your favorite local spots! Limit of one item per day for teen summer reading participants only; maximum of eight rewards per person.  You must have received at least one 5K ticket before you can participate.

Museum Lover’s Extra

Post a photo of yourself at a museum or art gallery on your Instagram account and tag ewmlteen to get an extra ticket!  Photo will be re-posted to our Instagram account.  If you don’t have an Instagram account, email your picture to the library at reference@ewml.org, subject: Instagram.

Eligible Reading:

Age appropriate books, eBooks, and audiobooks are the only eligible reading materials. For eBooks or audiobooks, you will have to finish the book, then look up the correct number of pages in our online catalog before logging total pages online.
