If you live in Monroe, apply for a free library card by showing proof of residency and completing an application. Borrowers 16 years old and up receive cards that include video, DVD, and computer-use privileges. Borrowers 15 years old and under receive cards that include video, DVD, and computer-use privileges with parental approval.
Library cards are valid for 3 years. Renewals are free. Lost or damaged cards cost $1 to replace. Your Edith Wheeler Memorial Library card may be used in any Connecticut public library. Most borrowed materials may be returned to any public library. The responsibility for materials borrowed by minors rests with the parents or guardians.

Every item in the library collection, whether print and non-print, may be borrowed for 21 days, with the following exceptions:
14 day loan period: Adult books classified as New Books and under 500 pages, circuit audiobooks, and high school summer reading list books
7 Day Loan: Adult Department magazines (except the most recent issue - see below), adult and children's entertainment and nonfiction DVD discs and VHS tapes (including those interlibrary loaned from other libraries for Monroe patrons)
2 Day Loan: Passes to cultural sites
42 Day Loan: Items interlibrary loaned to other libraries for the borrowing libraries' cardholders
Overnight loan: Reference books at the discretion of the librarian
In-House Use Only: The most recent issue of each adult magazine (Note: the most recent issue of children's magazines may circulate), newspapers, microforms, and electronic databases
Passes to cultural sites acquired by the library itself may be borrowed by any cardholder in good standing. In compliance with the wishes of the Friends of the Edith Wheeler Memorial Library, passes to cultural sites donated by the Friends organization may be borrowed only by Monroe residents, non-resident Monroe taxpayers, and Friends members.
Most materials may be renewed once. Renewals can be made in person, by telephone, or online. (Click here to learn how to renew materials online.) Items on reserve for other patrons, DVDs and VHS tapes, passes to cultural sites, reference books loaned overnight, items obtained by interlibrary loan, and books on the high school summer reading lists cannot be renewed.
- $0.15 per day per item for most adult materials
- $0.10 per day per item for most children's materials
- $2 per day per item for videos, DVDs, CD-ROMS, equipment for loan, and passes to cultural sites
If the material you want is checked out, you may reserve it. Reserves can be made in person, by telephone, or online. (Click here to learn how to reserve materials online.) We will notify you by phone when the item becomes available.
If we do not own the item you want, we will try to borrow it for you from another library and have it sent here. Please ask at the adult or children's information desks.
